Changes to Re-Search

March 9th, 2010

I’m slowly getting back to a reality with internet access and computers to use. Apologies it has taken longer than expected…

Whilst I’ve been away, however, I’ve had time to re-evaluate my use of this website. Websites live and die through constant use; unless they are updated regularly they do not grow. This takes time and effort.

I have been happy to do this for this website for the past few months and it grew and hopefully people found it useful. However, the format of the website meant that any debates that were sparked were sometimes difficult to follow, and these were intermingled with useful “articles” or “features” and news items from different teams and copies of my own presentations.

So I have decided to migrate a lot of my “posts” to SAR World.

On here I hope to write daily news items, keep a directory of UK SAR organisations – from all SAR disciplines, add useful “features” and “articles”, maybe have equipment reviews and links to suppliers etc. All this will go on the “main” SAR world website, which in time will probably be funded by SAR equipment suppliers adverts. [In time any "profits" from this would go to a SAR World trust to be distributed to UK SAR groups!] I’m hopeful that this will be up and running sometime around April. [In time if all goes well this might extend to become a worldwide SAR resource!]

All the while everyone can join in the debates on the already existing SAR World Forum. Here I will post those thoughts likely to spark debate – as this is a much better format to discuss ideas and thoughts. For today’s thought/topic click here…

This website will remain up and running but will be limited to my presentations and links to SAR World debates / news / features.

Hopefully, in this way, I can improve on what has been started here.

Re-Search Website Updates

January 18th, 2010

The sharp-sighted amongst you may have noticed one or two small changes to the Re-Search website over the weekend.

Last week, as I noted in my post “Re-Search SAR Clothing Pages moves to its own Website“, the old “shop” was moved to www.sargear.org.uk. Here, as before, you can buy your T-shirts with your favourite SAR slogans - as well as donating to your favourite ALSAR Unit(s).

This was to make way for my SAR Bookshop. I made the decision, that whilst a separate website would be more professional, it would nearly double my workload. Keeping it all on one website just makes it slightly more simple for me (although makes it more expensive to buy multiple books – e-mail me if you want more than one book!) I’ll keep the www.sarbookshop.com domain name though. Easier to remember!

I have also decided, for now, to remove all the advertising banners and the like that were on the website. This is not because I feel that they were bad – just that I didn’t like the look of them on the website. Hopefully the SAR Bookshop will sell enough books to cover the cost of running the website… so buy something!

As part of the tidy up, I have also removed the “keywords cloud”. Again, I felt it made the site look a bit cluttered.

Whilst I want to concentrate on writing useful content for the website, if you feel there are any changes that you would like to see – let me know…

Top Re-Search Posts of 2009

December 15th, 2009

It is hard to believe that I only started the “new” Re-Search website in August this year – as a convenient way to share my presentations, papers and thoughts on lowland search and rescue in the UK. In September I started to try to write at least once a week to the website and then at the end of October / beginning of November I started writing five times [or more] a week.

I have already written 72 different posts, and have attracted over 150 comments from readers. The website has had over 700 different visitors, clocking up over 1700 visits, and viewing over 5000 pages. The average time spent on the website is over five minutes per visit.

And so the top five posts for 2009 are;

5. ISIS SAR Missing Person Training Presentation

4. ALSAR on Dartmoor

3. Emergency Response & Search & Rescue by Gary Foo

2. The Search Exercise Planners Handbook Index

and finally the most popular post for 2009 is

1. Improving ALSAR Training

Let me know what was your favourite post.
