SEBEV (Berkshire) Search and Rescue Team needs volunteers

January 29th, 2010

Today will be a day of housekeeping messages, with the odd link and news item.

As you know, SEBEV is my local Search and Rescue Team in Berkshire. This January they have launched a recruitment drive for more volunteers.

The team were visited by presenter Maggie Philbin (Tomorrows World, Multi-coloured Swap Shop) and did 3 live interviews on the Andrew Peach show from their HQ at Easthampstead Conference Centre and other locations around their local area.

Maggie was fascinated by our HQ location (a cold-war nuclear bunker) and did an audio Twitter about it which can be found by clicking here

These interviews mark that start of SEBEV SARs recruitment initiatives to increase their numbers from the current 25 to 50 in 2010. [Read more here...]

I’m not at all biased, of course, but if you are interested in giving something back to your local community, why not give SEBEV SAR a go?

SAR World – New SAR Forum Launched

January 4th, 2010

Are we seeing the launch of a new worldwide, all encompassing SAR website and forum? Well, if we are, remember where it all started!

Although the SAR World website – www.sarworld.org – is not yet up and running, today sees the launch of the new SAR World Forum.

The team behind the website, all volunteers as always, are starting small and as such have decided to have a “friends” launch of the forum to get it started. In time, more groups will be invited to partake, more volunteers asked to help out and the website will develop of its own accord. For now, however, a select few – including readers of the Re-Search website, are invited to pop-in, log-in and join-in the debates.

To start the ball rolling I have posted a couple of bits – give your opinion, or start something up yourself. It is, after all, meant to be all of our’s website.

Have an opinion on ALSAR – post you comment here…

Want to do more for SAR but don’t know how? Check out this…

Have your say in what SAR World becomes here…

I will, of course, continue to post here daily, 5 times a week, as well as joining the debates over on SAR World!

Busy Christmas and New Year for SAR Volunteers

January 4th, 2010

As I slowly start to get my mind back into the real world after two weeks of Christmas activities, and start thinking about SAR again, it would be inappropriate not to mention the hard work that many SAR volunteers put in over my Christmas break.

Quite a few Christmases ago Bob Geldof implored us all to think about others less fortunate than us over Christmas [I know I'm showing my age!] and it is hard to really do so. But for many families, the anguish and, in some cases grief, of a missing person goes on – oblivious to the time of year. And the SAR volunteers keep going out, putting their own family life on hold for a moment, to help these poor unfortunate individuals and their families.

So, here is my, probably inadequate, list of the work done by ALSAR and LSDogs Units over the Holidays – with, as always, mine (our) thanks and admiration.

Berkshire Search and Rescue Dogs – 18th Dec. (Missing Despondent Female), 28th Dec. (Missing Despondent Male)

Buckinghamshire Search and Rescue – 23rd Dec. (Civil Contingencies Role), 28th Dec. (Missing Despondent Male)

Essex Search and Rescue – 20th Dec. (Missing Male), 23rd Dec. (Missing Male)

Hampshire Search and Rescue – 23rd Dec. (Missing Female with Dementia), 2nd Jan (Missing Female with Dementia)

Midshires Search and Rescue – 17/18th Dec. (Civil Contingencies Role), 20-22nd Dec. (Civil Contingencies Role), 26th Dec. (Missing Teenage Male)

SEBEV Search and Rescue – 18th Dec. (Missing Despondent Female)

Sussex Search and Rescue – 18th Dec. (Missing Male with Autism)

On the bottom of this I’d just like to add my thanks to two “commenters” who visited and took the time to comment on my website during my Christmas break. Thank you to Kris Manning (SEBEV SAR) and Johnnie Walker (SusSAR) for their very kind words – hopefully I’ll be able to “keep it up” through 2010.
