Surrey Search and Rescue Team

July 1st, 2010

Just a very quick post about a meeting I went to last night; where I hope I witnessed the birth of a new search and rescue team in Surrey.

Hosted by Surrey Police, with speakers from ALSAR, LSDogs and Sussex Search and Rescue, a core team of volunteers were gathered and will hopefully take on the setting up of the team.

Mountain Rescue Campaign to Save VAT

February 5th, 2010

The Mountain Rescue England & Wales campaign to get HM Government to waive VAT for MR and ALSAR teams got the backing this week of Private Eye.

As they comment;

Gordon Brown waived VAT at a stroke for the Simon Cowell produced celebrity cover version of Everybody Hurts to raise funds for Haiti. The mountain rescuers don’t begrudge the earthquake victims a penny; but they wonder why the government can’t do the same for them.

Maybe it’s time for us all to start contacting the prospective candidates for our constituencies getting their support for after the election?

Combined Visual and Infra-Red Search

February 3rd, 2010

I came across the following on the New Scientist website today.

Could seeing with heat and light simultaneously improve search and rescue missions? Nathan Rasmussen of Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, thinks so. He has created a hybrid video system that integrates visible and infrared footage into a single shot. [Read more here...]

It definitely sounds like something that the aerial search community should keep their eye on…

As the article comments;

Tom Jensen, a spokesman for Washington Air Search and Rescue, an organisation that helps coordinate aerial searches, says that being able to see the output of both cameras on the same screen in real-time would be “pretty slick”

After fun eve with hants search and rescue scratched face will recover. Trousers probably won’t! Good stuff. Nice people… Sandra Gidley, MP

and

Great evening training with Hampshire Search and Rescue

Impressed by the friendly atmosphere, teamwork & the technical difficulty of ensuring every area covered at night on rough terrain… Martin Tod

Sounds like a good evening all round, good publicity, good networking and good search training!

SEBEV (Berkshire) Search and Rescue Team needs volunteers

January 29th, 2010

Today will be a day of housekeeping messages, with the odd link and news item.

As you know, SEBEV is my local Search and Rescue Team in Berkshire. This January they have launched a recruitment drive for more volunteers.

The team were visited by presenter Maggie Philbin (Tomorrows World, Multi-coloured Swap Shop) and did 3 live interviews on the Andrew Peach show from their HQ at Easthampstead Conference Centre and other locations around their local area.

Maggie was fascinated by our HQ location (a cold-war nuclear bunker) and did an audio Twitter about it which can be found by clicking here

These interviews mark that start of SEBEV SARs recruitment initiatives to increase their numbers from the current 25 to 50 in 2010. [Read more here...]

I’m not at all biased, of course, but if you are interested in giving something back to your local community, why not give SEBEV SAR a go?
